Our Picks for Souni Per Il Popolo 2014
Suoni Per Il Popolo brings some of the best far-out indie acts from around the world to Montreal for three weeks of rare and amazing performances. Here are our picks for this year’s edition.
MOONFACE – June 6 at La Sala Rossa
Between the banter and the piano ballads, the latest incarnation of Canada’s inimitable and madly prolific Spencer Krug’s solo project (formerly Wolf Parade, Sunset Rubdown, Swan Lake, Frog Eyes) will make you laugh until you cry until you laugh again.
THE LUYAS – June 12 at Breakglass Studios
Montreal’s own orchestral ethereal indie pop babes will be broadcasting the sweet sounds from their latest release, 2012’s Animator (has it really been two years already?) and – if we’re really lucky – maybe, hopefully, some new material.
AMEN DUNES – June 21 at Casa Del Popolo
Damon McMahon packs heartwrenching vibrato vocals and reverberant folk-ish jams that have been vibing throughout the land all the way from Brooklyn with this month’s release of his new album, Love, on Sacred Bones Records.
CRYSTAL STILTS – June 21 at Il Motore
Ostensibly the sonic lovechild of Joy Division and The Doors, Brooklyn’s Crystal Stilts is heartbreakingly playing the same time as fellow Brooklynite Amen Dunes. This is a win-win. Still, choose wisely.
OUGHT – June 13 at Casa Del Popolo
Another shining starlet out of Montreal – stylistically, out of a Talking Heads-Joy Division hybrid – Ought was named Best New Music by the fine folks at Pitchfork for their debut More Than Any Other Day. Just as they ought. (Sorry.)
ALDEN PENNER – June 11 at Casa Del Popolo
Montreal’s favorite falsetto and former Unicorn Alden Penner’s new solo album, Exegesis, is an artful indie rock concoction well worth beholding in the flesh.
LITTLE SCREAM – June 13 at Breakglass Studios
Yay, Little Scream is back! Montreal’s delightful songstress Laurel Sprengelmeyer also boasts one of the world’s coolest names ever.
MAICA MIA – June 14 at Breakglass Studios
The Montreal-based experimental rock duo (featuring Godspeed You! Black Emperor member Mauro Pezzente) serves up spacey lo-fi ballads to fill your little hearts to the brim with feels.
SWANS + XIU XIU – June 18 at Le National
Swans is great. Xiu Xiu is great. In my professional opinion, the venue is likely to be packed to the brim with attractive hip folks with good taste in music.
tUnE-yArDs – June 18 at La Tulipe
Cacophonic songstress Tune-Yards is another guaranteed “It” show. Must-see if incredible pipes set to tribal rhythms and experimental toying with quirky sounds is your vibe.
EAGULLS – June 19 at Casa Del Popolo
These Leeds, UK-based prog-rockers are coming at us from all the way across the pond. Let’s show them a grand old time. Try not to let your eardrums blow out in the process. Earplugs will be your friend this eve.
